Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Is there anything that says “healthy teeth and gums” as much as a dazzling white smile? At Port Washington Dental Care in Merrick, NY, we work with all of our patients to give them the healthiest smiles possible, offering a full array of dental solutions and ongoing care. However, as your dentist in Merrick, we cannot control your lifestyle habits, and though your grin may be as healthy as possible, it may not look that way. This could mean you are a candidate for teeth whitening.

A popular form of cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening can be found in many formats and styles. In the past, it was a lengthy and even uncomfortable procedure, but today, it can be fast, effective and long-lasting. As your cosmetic dentist, we will gladly work with you to help you learn if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening. We provide in-office treatments that use safe formulas, custom dental trays, and less than one hour of time to achieve great results.

While you might wonder if you are a better candidate for teeth whitening through an over the counter method or at-home system, we have yet to find any of those solutions that work as quickly and as strongly as our in-office approach.

If the idea of a one-hour treatment appeals, you are probably a good candidate for the whitening we offer, but remember, we look first at the health of your teeth and gums. A checkup and even a cleaning may be recommended, and if there are any general or preventative needs, we’ll address those first. Once your teeth and gums are in good condition, we’ll then listen to your cosmetic concerns, and generally our teeth whitening services are one of the nicest solutions.

While a good candidate for teeth whitening is someone who has discoloration of the teeth due to age, smoking, drinking staining fluids (tea, coffee, colas, and red wine), or medication use, there are some who may not be a good candidate. For example, if your teeth are discolored deep below the enamel, also called intrinsic staining, we may recommend bonding or veneers to address the stains.
