Dentures

When you lose your teeth, you experience so many different problems – of course you can’t enjoy apples, steak, corn on the cob, crunchy vegetables, or any of the other foods you love, unless you want to chop or puree them. Most people find, that the worst effect is the damage to their self-esteem. With missing teeth, you don’t typically want to smile, or even open your mouth all that much when talking. Laughing? Forget it.

The good news is that with modern dentistry, functionality and appearance can be restored. Implants are the best solution, since you never have to worry about losing them, and you know that they’ll be every bit as functional as natural teeth. But, they’re not right for everyone. There are several pros and cons. Sometimes medical conditions preclude implants, and the reality is that they’re not within everyone’s price range. When implants aren’t possible medically or financially, dentures are a great solution, that’s a fact.

About Dentures

Dentures serve to replace missing teeth. If all or most of your teeth are missing, you’ll need a full denture. If only some teeth are missing, you can get by with a dental bridge. Whether full or partial, dentures work by fitting over the bone ridge in such a way as to deliver the same appearance and function as your natural teeth.

You’ve heard the horror stories – someone is out on a date, enjoying a meal with someone they’d really love to see again, and their dentures slip or fall out. The reality is that this doesn’t happen. Properly fitted dentures are very stable.

That said, in the beginning it can be a bit unpleasant wearing dentures. This is simply because you’re used to your natural teeth – at least as many of them as are left. Your gums will shrink if you’ve had extractions, and dentures won’t fit perfectly. That’s why, at Port Washington Dental Care, we fit you with temporary dentures while your gums shrink. They’ll look good and give you the best possible functionality, but they won’t fit as well as your permanent dentures. The permanent ones will look and perform almost as well as your natural teeth.

Types of Dentures

So far, we’ve been talking about standard dentures, but there are other options. For instance, if you’re a good implant candidate, implant-supported overdentures can be a great solution if you have only some missing teeth. They fit on your remaining teeth, and they’re fully functional. You won’t be able to tell the difference between implant-supported overdentures, and neither will anyone else.

Partial dentures are another option. They’re inexpensive, and they fill the spaces caused by missing teeth. They can also be a great solution if you’re waiting for implant surgery.

The Right Fit

The first step to making your dentures is taking a mold of your mouth, top and bottom. This is used to make your dentures, and to ensure that they will fit properly. Properly fitted dentures will allow you to function in essentially the same way as you did with your natural teeth, eating all your favorite foods without difficulty and smiling just as much as you like. Be sure to follow our aftercare instructions for the best results and to ensure your dentures last a long time and your mouth stays healthy.
