Dental Crowns

Are your teeth worn, chipped, stained or otherwise damaged? At Port Washington Dental Care, Dr. Tassos Katechis can fit you with dental crowns that will dramatically improve the look of your teeth. Crowns also increase the life of your teeth by protecting them from further damage. You could think of a crown as a sort of protective hat that a tooth wears, guarding against additional damage and improving its appearance.

Dental crowns are made from different materials, but porcelain is what’s most commonly used. That’s because it’s the material that looks most like your real teeth.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Typically, dental crowns will require a few visits to our office. First, you’ll see us for a consultation to determine if crowns are the right solution for you. Then on your next visit, Dr. Katechis will use a local anesthetic to numb your tooth. He’ll remove any problem areas, and then make an impression of the teeth that are to receive crowns – this is so that your crowns will fit perfectly. Don’t worry about going home with unsightly teeth – Dr. Katechis will fit you with temporary crowns to ensure that you’ll be able to eat properly and look good while your custom crowns are being made. Then, when your crowns come back from the lab, Dr. Katechis will install them using a special type of bonding cement.

The Benefits of Dental Crowns

When properly cared for, crowns can last a very long time, and they really don’t need much in the way of special care. All you have to do is brush, floss, and see us for checkups as you would normally. Just be sure that you don’t bite down hard, or grind your teeth, because this can damage crowns in the same way as it would damage your natural teeth.

Crowns look exactly like your real teeth. That’s because porcelain is translucent and lustrous, like natural teeth, and your crowns can even be colored to match your existing teeth. Unless you want to tell people that you’ve had work done, your crowns can be a secret between you and Dr. Katechis. A word on whitening, though – crowns will not respond to whitening. If you’re displeased with the appearance of your teeth because they’re yellowed or dingy, and you’re thinking about having whitening treatments, make sure you do it before your crowns are made.

Crowns are superior to bridgework and dentures, because they don’t slip, and they won’t encourage bone loss in your jaw. You’ll also never have to worry about irritation, won’t have to take them out and night, and there’s no chance of you losing them!

Crowns also will not decay, and plaque won’t build up on them, that is a fact. Follow our aftercare instructions to ensure for long lasting results.

Improve Your Smile

You can see that there are many reasons to consider dental crowns, especially if you are a candidate. But, the most important benefit may not be in terms of function. The sad fact is that many people who have damaged teeth are reluctant to smile or laugh. They’re afraid that people will see their unsightly teeth, and we feel that your quality of life is adversely affected if you’re afraid to smile and laugh for fear of embarrassment.
